Hey!

I'm Tom, a Master’s graduate with a background in both Theatre and English Literature. As my chosen subjects suggest, I have a passion for words in all their forms - from Shakespeare to Shelley, Wordsworth to Wilde. If it’s poetry or prose, I’m your guy for help.

In my classroom, you, the student are truly in charge and always free to guide the session in a way that suits you. Whether you need help untangling the Bard’s rich language and verse or want to dive into the philosophical ideas behind writers like Stevenson, Woolf, and Baldwin, we’ll find a path that works for you.

My hope is that we not only practice close textual analysis and past exam papers but also enjoy rich conversations and great debates - because that’s how ideas come to life.

So, come join me in class and let’s talk and study together!

With this is in mind, our first session will often focus on your learning style and what content you would like to cover. My Tutoring Journey

I first began tutoring while studying for my Master’s - originally just as a way to help pay the bills - but I quickly realised it was something I wanted to keep doing. Now, more than six years later, I’m proud to say I still love it just as much. Whether we’re conjugating verbs or exploring the symbolism of the green light in The Great Gatsby, supporting students as they learn and grow remains the most rewarding part of my work.

While I specialise in GCSE and A Level English, I’ve worked with learners from all backgrounds and abilities - from helping Portuguese student António decipher Shakespeare as a second language, to supporting Will through his GCSE resits after his recent ADHD diagnosis, to refreshing Becky, a trainee teacher brushing up on the syllabus. These experiences have given me not only knowledge and expertise, but also the versatility to support every learner’s needs, including those with SEND.

Credentials

2019-2021

Gender, Sexuality, and Culture
Master of Arts
The University of Manchester

With a Master’s in Gender, Sexuality, and Culture focused on Gothic fiction, our lessons can go beyond the basics to explore deeper themes, cultural context, and the hidden layers within a text. This approach helps to make connections between literature, history, and ideas - making the study of English more engaging and providing the deeper analysis that exam boards look for in higher level essays.

2014-2017

Drama and English Literature
Bachelor of Arts
The University of Huddersfield

Using my BA in Drama and English Literature, our lessons are built on a strong understanding of how texts work and the analytical skills needed to study them in depth. This foundation makes it easier to break down language, structure, and themes, helping you approach English with clarity and confidence.
